2008 Football Results
After only a week to recover from the exploits of the Summer BBQ, 18 teams met at Goals! within the shadow of the new Wembley Stadium arch, to take part in the 2007 IAS 5 a side football tournament, sponsored by Brixton plc.
With the teams split in to 3 divisions, the competition was strong to wrestle the mighty trophy from Jansons Colliers CRE.
The standard of football had improved. Well, apart from Shed Ur Illusions that is.
Teams from Edwin Hill, Brixton, Cushmans & JLL all displaying levels of skill and fitness new to many shed heads.
From the group stages it went to quarter finals. From the quarter finals it went to the semi finals, and then from the semi’s to the big final.
Edwin Hill A and JLL worked their way through the other teams to meet in the final. (although JLL were lucky to be there after a particularly one sided game against Vail Williams – guess who is writing this piece !!).
The standard of football was probably the highest for many years, and with a 2 – 0 lead over Edwin Hill, even after a late goal from Stephen Payne of Edwin Hill ( or is that Brixton), JLL were the victors. The winning score being 2 – 1.
JLL lifted the trophy and also won the players of the tournament, with John Rea Palmer being voted player of the tournament. The trophy was kindly sponsored by Doherty Baines and it was presented by Alex Kington of Brixton. John also received £100 of vouchers.
Alas there was no trophy for the goal of the tournament which was arguably scored by Peter Freeman of Vail Williams, in a manor similar to that scored by Paul Gascoigne against Scotland in the 1996 European Championships against Scotland!! Perhaps next year……
